IVF is offered on the NHS if certain criteria are met. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) fertility guidelines make recommendations about who should have access to IVF treatment on the NHS in England and Wales, however individual NHS integrated care boards (ICBs) make the final decision about who can have NHS-funded IVF in their local area, and criteria may differ or be stricter in different areas of residence.

If people don’t meet the criteria for their specific area (ICB), they may need to pay for private treatment.

See our page about NHS funded care and criteria here.

Private Care - Prescriptions

We are committed to providing all patients with choice , and that includes how you receive your medications for fertility treatment.

As a service, we use CPL Pharmacy in Royal Liverpool University Hospital as our standard provider of all medication. This means they will deliver all required medication and consumables to your home following your appointment at the centre. We work closely with CPL to ensure you have everything you need to start your treatment when you need to.

As a private patient you may prefer to use an alternative pharmacy.  If you feel there is a more suitable location to collect your medication , please advise your consultant so that a private prescription can be arranged. Please note it will be your responsibility to ensure the pharmacy you choose can provide all items as follows:

  • The prescribed medication that you and your consultant have agreed
  • A supply of needles, syringes and a sharps box to dispose of used consumables
  • A drop off facility for you to return the sharps box as above.  Hewitt fertility centre is not able to accept sharps boxes for disposal.
